Luxembourg Airport Runway Rehabilitation

Tendering Services

Project summary

Luxembourg Airport’s runway 06-24 was scheduled to undergo a complete runway rehabilitation and upgrade of its associated infrastructure including drainage, electrical systems and taxiway surfaces. As one of Europe’s premier cargo hubs, it plays a critical role in supporting the continent’s air freight capacity. We were commissioned by a tendering party to undertake a general appraisal of the design, assess value engineering options and provide technical representation during client presentations. Travel and on-airport interviews were undertaken during challenging times for the industry requiring flexibility and added visual clarity to our content.

Scope of assessment

We undertook an in-depth assessment of the French language design documentation and specifications, reviewing materials and mixes for the main runway pavement and its adjacent shoulders. We also investigated what environmental benefits could be brought about by incorporating wax additives. These additives can help to reduce asphalt mixing temperatures and lower fuel consumption. Our appraisal extended to utilities, including the pit and duct layout and drainage networks before assessing overall buildability and on-site obstacle limitation restrictions.

We then assisted the contractor by preparing high quality visuals for their data which comprised nightly asphalt production schedules, process timelines, labour histograms and material outputs. Our scope also covered tender reponses for building information modelling (BIM) procedures and an approach for undertaking detailed stakeholder engagement over the duration of the contract.

We also prepared our customer’s presentation for all topics covering health and safety, programme and methodology. Our services extended to providing on-airport tender support presenting design management, value engineering and quality proposals to the airport client team. The tender process provided an opportunity for us to use our extensive experience from the consulting engineering and D&B contracting environments.

Benefit to the contractor

Our flexibility to travel, and an ability to closely analyse the French language documentation, ensured our client was able to arrive with a fully considered design appraisal and high-quality presentation. Using the latest data analytics tools and visualisation software, we were able to depart from the standard Excel formatted charts and provide bespoke visual content and graphics.
